What’s the difference between blue shampoo and purple shampoo?

Purple shampoo and blue shampoo are both colour-correcting haircare products used to counteract unwanted tones in the hair. However, they are designed for different purposes and target different colour concerns. Here's the difference between purple shampoo and blue shampoo:

Purple Shampoo

Purple shampoo is primarily intended for use on blonde, silver, or gray hair. It contains purple or violet pigments that help neutralize and counteract yellow and orange tones in the hair. As mentioned earlier, purple is the opposite of yellow on the color wheel, so the purple pigments in the shampoo work to cancel out the warm tones, leaving the hair looking cooler and more vibrant. Purple shampoo is commonly used by individuals with blonde highlights, balayage, or light-coloured hair to maintain or enhance their desired cool tones.

Blue Shampoo

On the other hand, blue shampoo is typically used to address brassy or orange tones in darker hair colours, such as brunette, dark blonde, or even certain shades of red hair. Blue is opposite orange on the color wheel, so blue pigments in the shampoo help to counteract the warm tones and reduce brassiness. Blue shampoo is particularly useful for brunettes who have bleached or highlighted sections in their hair, as these areas can develop unwanted orange or coppery tones. By incorporating blue shampoo into their haircare routine, they can neutralize those tones and achieve a cooler, more balanced look.

While purple shampoo and blue shampoo serve similar purposes of colour correction, their targeted color concerns and pigments differ. It's essential to select the right shampoo based on your hair color and the specific tones you want to counteract. Always follow the instructions and consider consulting your stylist for personalized recommendations on which colour-correcting shampoo is best suited for your hair.
